Alco Chemical: Sustainability

As a division of National Starch & Chemical Company, a member of the ICI Group, Alco Chemical is included in the ICI
Sustainability Challenge 2010 Plan. This plan sets goals and objectives for many
areas of our business with respect
to Sustainability. The following categories are components of our
plan:

Product Design:

Our innovation addresses sustainability throughout the supply chain to ensure we use materials that are fit for purpose.
We seek raw materials and processes which are more sustainable and that deliver sustainable
benefits. We routinely
review our products to see if we can reduce any associated hazards or environmental impacts. We manage our
product portfolio with respect to regulatory and environmental
concerns and requirements. We will employ product
stewardship standards across our supply chain,
from suppliers, through manufacture and distribution, to use by
customers. Internally, we manage high risk materials to minimize exposure to the environment, community, and
customers. Internally, we will determine our environmental footprint across key activities and products, so that future
improvements are targeted for maximum impact. We continually look for new and improved raw materials that are
environmentally friendly and easier to handle.

Chemicals/Formulations:

As part of our product stewardship activities, we conduct routine hazard and risk assessments of all of our raw
materials, intermediates, and products. This is of particular importance when developing new and
modified products.
We have systems in place for managing issues and concerns that have been identified
by various regulators,
stakeholders, and internal assessments. These systems enable us to manage the
use of various chemicals,
and our formulations, in a safe and responsible manner.

Facilities:

Business continuity, emergency planning, and crisis management processes are integral parts of our Responsible
Care Management System. We have well developed plans and processes which enable
us to sustain our business
and facilities in a safe manner. Training and regular scenario testing are
part of our plan. Emissions reductions are
a key component of the Challenge 2010 program.

We routinely work with Insurance and Regulatory agencies to ensure our facilities are maintained to the highest
standards and those improvements are continuously built-in to our normal operations.

Manufacturing Process:

We continually review and asses the sustainability of our Manufacturing Processes. Each are held to the highest
standards with respect to safety and regulatory requirements. Corporate, divisional, and local manufacturing
goals and
focal points are measured routinely. Results are shared, both internally and externally,
with shareholders. Safety
and quality are key focal points shared by all. We desire to be a responsible
member of the community with
which we regularly participate and communicate with. Each of our manufacturing
processes are reviewed regularly to improve
and achieve the highest levels of sustainability. Our
workforce is empowered to implement improvements towards
safety, productivity, and flexibility.

We employ modern technology and equipment to enhance our ability to bring new products to market responsibly
and quicker. This technology and equipment enables us to minimize emissions and reduce
energy consumption and
reduce resource utilization.

Packaging:

Packaging material sources are continually monitored. Recycling of used packaging materials is a key consideration
for determination of approved packaging. Approximately 90% or greater of all packaging
materials used has been
deemed recyclable. Internally, recycling of used packaging materials is a standard
practice through EPA approved
facilities. Strict standards are adhered to with respect to recycling, cleaning, and transport. In addition, all pallets used are
reusable or recyclable.

Logistics/Distribution.

Our businesses assess all aspects of product stewardship throughout the supply chain. This covers Logistics and
Distribution. We hold our Carriers and Warehouses to stringent standards with respect to safety, regulatory, and environmental
requirements. Regular assessments are performed. We continually
strive to improve our processes through cooperation
with our supply chain partners. We engage with key
customers on sustainability issues. We actively manage standards
across our supply chain. We engage
with key suppliers on sustainability issues.

Safety:

We are committed to sustaining safety in the workplace. We have achieved >12 years without a Lost Time accident and
are committed to achieving a Total Recordable Case rate of 0.0. We will do this through a
myriad of safety programs,
developing the safety culture of our people, and by investing in training and
equipment.

Energy & Waste:

We are committed to continually seek ways to save energy and reduce emissions. Challenge 2010 is an ititiative to
achieve the following goals by the year 2010:

  1. A 5% reduction in Energy Use, Greenhouse Gases, VOC’s, & Carcinogens
  2. A 10% reduction in Water Use, Acid Gas Emissions, Wastewater Discharge, and Non-Hazardous waste to landfills
